Pre-Conference Courses (Thursday):
- Simulation: A Teaching Technique - Dennis Edgerly and Kim Whitten-Chung
Simulation is a powerful instructional strategy that deepens conceptual understanding, builds psychomotor proficiency, strengthens clinical judgment, and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration. The efficacy of simulation is strengthened through intentional, evidence-based design and implementation. This session will establish a shared definition of simulation, explore its role in EMS education as both a formative learning tool and a summative assessment method, and address key design considerations, including fidelity selection and structured debriefing. Participants will leave with practical frameworks and ready-to-use tools for integrating simulation into their programs.
Learning Objectives: At the end of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Define simulation. 2. Distinguish simulation-based education from other experiential learning strategies. 3. Compare the use of simulation as a formative teaching technique versus a summative assessment method. 4. Differentiate between levels of fidelity. 5. Select the appropriate level of fidelity based on learning objectives. 6. Explain the role of structured debriefing in promoting reflective practice and clinical reasoning. 7. Design a simulation event aligned with specific learning outcomes that can be implemented in their program.
